An unwanted Christmas gift of $100 has reached $500 on Trade Me.

The poster, Robbie Shefford, who lives in Ashburton, put the note on the auction website as a joke but it is already nearly three times the price since he posted it on Boxing Day.

There were 94 bids as at 1pm today, 157,062 page views and 2901 people had added the auction to their watchlist.

Mr Shefford engaged with 140 people on the site who had asked questions about the auction.

When asked why he was doing it, he said he was "being smart on Boxing Day about kids selling their Xmas presents on TradeMe" so they could buy the stuff they really wanted, and he decided to be "ridicules".

Bidding closes on Saturday at 4.57pm.

One person asked is he would consider selling for $80, to which he replied: "Yeah, sweet as, it will be 20 buck post and packaging".
