Those of us who love a good bath will know the shame that comes from admission. "Ew, that's like swimming in your own filth" is a common phrase used by bath haters, but that's not accurate at all. Baths have a bad rep, and although Lush bath bombs have increased the popularity of a good soak, there's still a tonne of misinformation surrounding the tub. Here are just some of the reasons to opt for a bath over a shower;

1. Laying horizontal in water improves mood

Laying flat suspended by water is possibly the most simple way to improve your mood. A 2002 study tells us that a daily bath at the end of each day significantly increases optimism and happiness in bathers. This is due to the the positioning, warmth and isolation that a simple bath provides.

2. It's great for your skin

A warm bath can do wonders for your skin, especially if you suffer from a dermatological condition. Being submerged in a body of water hydrates your skin and lowers your cortisone levels, resulting in less wrinkles.

3. It relieves muscle tension

In the bath, it's hard not to be relaxed. Throughout the day, your body retains tension from sitting or standing, and by the end of the day, what you really need is to relax. A nice hot bath is a great way to ease this muscle tension and is provide relief to muscle injuries or strains.

4. It helps get you to sleep

A hot bath just before bed is a surefire way to ready your body for rest, and science tells us that it dramatically improves your quality of sleep. This is a result of your body's reaction to temperature. When we feel warm, our body's produce melatonin, a hormone that induces sleep.

5. They aren't unhygienic

Yep! Most importantly, the humble bath isn't actually less hygienic than a shower. It goes without saying that unless you've been sweating it out at the gym or rolling around in mud, a bath is perfectly hygienic;  especially with added products like soap or salts.
