It's been hammered into us that we need to keep up our water intake, and using a water bottle is an obvious way to keep guzzling that water back.Â
But you may want to re-think re-using the same bottle over and over, as it turns out that if you use a refillable water bottle the lid could be covered in more bacteria than you ever realised!
12 water bottles were tested and it showed that they displayed more than 300,000 colony-forming units per square centimeter (CFU/sq cm). This bacteria is invisible to the eye, so it's a hidden evil!
The worst type of bottle lid for germs is the slide-top, which contains over 900,000 CFU/sq cm on average. The best is the straw-top bottle, which has just 25 CFU/sq cm. That is only 2 CFU/sq cm less than the average home toilet seat – which means the majority of water bottles have MORE CFU than your toilet.
The bacteria build up comes from constantly refilling and reusing your bottle without washing it in between, so stop being lazy and try give your water bottle a good wash between uses.Â
