Remember when customer Jane O'Brien found a strange white object in her McDonald's burger?

She described as "pre-chewed, old hard gum" but it wasn't!

She was offered a replacement burger and the offending burger was taken for investigation.

"We now have test results back from the external laboratory, Asure Quality, and can confirm the sample is not consistent either visually or in general chemical composition with chewing gum," Kim Bartlett, McDonald's New Zealand Communication Manager told ONE News.

"It shows strong similarities to polyethylene - a plastic which has its primary use in packaging.

"We will now take the opportunity to complete a full investigation into how it came to be in the burger.

"We serve 1.5 million customers per week and despite strict operational procedures sometimes mistakes happen – but we'll always put our hand up and say if we don't get it right.

"This case highlights the need for us to be given the chance to investigate and respond with facts."

Ms O'Brien told ONE News she was "very relieved that it's plastic".
