An overenthusiastic collector has been caught with more than 1,000 eggs in his fridge after he stole them from work.

The security guard, whose name is Gu, was caught smuggling two suitcases of goods out of the food factory where he worked in Pinghu City, China.

Police were shell shocked when they later found the astounding number of eggs in the man’s fridge, all of which had been meticulously labelled with their individual use-by date.

Gu’s explanation for this? He “really liked eggs”.

"I lost count (of) how many times I have stolen. Probably hundreds of times. I have stolen everything in my house."

Police also found meat, soap, boxes of tissues and bottles of detergent at Gu’s house.

A spokesman for the factory added:

"We are as surprised as everyone else that it was the security guard. We thought he was a hardworking and dutiful guard who enjoyed working nightshifts because he didn’t have a family to go home to. Now we have found out that he did it so he could roam around and steal without anyone seeing him."
