Justin Timberlake says What Goes Around... Comes Around wasn't about Britney Spears

For nearly two decades, fans have been convinced Justin Timberlake's hit What Goes Around... Comes Around was inspired by his split from Britney Spears.
Now, Justin is setting the record straight.
Appearing on Complex's Re-Rank YouTube series, the singer revealed the 2006 track wasn't actually based on his own heartbreak at all.
"Maybe I should dispel a rumour at this point, which has gone around forever," Justin said.
"It's not a personal story of mine."
Instead, the singer explained the inspiration came from a friend who was going through a painful breakup at the time.
"He was telling me what had happened, and I said, 'Do you mind if I write about this?'"
According to Justin, his friend enthusiastically gave him the green light, telling him: "Yeah, torch that b****. What goes around comes around."
Justin said the phrase instantly sparked an idea.
"I was like, 'I have to go. Thank you.'"
Even more surprising? He claims the song came together incredibly fast.
"I wrote it in damn near 20 minutes," he revealed.
The track went on to become one of the biggest hits from his FutureSex/LoveSounds era, complete with a dramatic music video that clocked in at almost 10 minutes long.

Throwback to that time JT was beat boxing and Britney's response was amazing.

Of course, fans have long linked the song to Britney Spears due to the pair's highly publicised breakup in 2002.
Justin and Britney first met as kids on The All-New Mickey Mouse Club before beginning their relationship in 1999. Their split quickly became one of the most talked-about celebrity breakups of the early 2000s.
In her 2023 memoir The Woman In Me, Britney reflected on the fallout from their relationship and criticised Justin's Cry Me A River music video, which featured a woman many fans thought resembled her.
Britney wrote that the video made her look like "a harlot who'd broken the heart of America's golden boy."
She also made several personal allegations about their relationship, including claims that Justin had been unfaithful and details surrounding a pregnancy termination when she was 19.
However, in 2024, Britney appeared to soften her stance, publicly apologising for some of the comments she made in the memoir.
Sharing praise for Justin's music on Instagram, she wrote: "I wanna apologise for some of the things I wrote about in my book. If I offended any of the people I genuinely care about I am deeply sorry."
She also revealed she was loving Justin's song Selfish, calling it "soo good".
So while fans may have spent years dissecting What Goes Around... Comes Around for hidden Britney references, Justin says the story behind the song is much simpler: it was someone else's breakup drama entirely.
