What people name their babies is often a sign of the times we are living in; in recent years, we have seen people naming their children after fads such as Game of Thrones characters and even Instagram filters.

However, names which are popular today may not be quite so popular in a decade or two.

Statista has produced some graphs, which show the decline in popularity of some of the most popular baby names in 1996.

Some of the names are still wildly popular, while others...not so much...

People aren't calling their children Kirsty as frequently anymore - Kirsty was the 53rd most popular baby name in England and Wales in 1996, but today it is number 1324.

The name Ross has also become unpopular, it enjoyed success in the 90s ('Friends' anyone?). It ranked at 68 in 1996, but now is in 954th place.

Some names appear to be classic - the girls names Sophie, Jessica and Emily, and the the boys names Jack, Thomas and James have never dropped from the top 10.

The name Gary has fallen out of fashion massively - only 33 babies in 2014 were called Gary.

Simon is suffering, too - only 150 babies in 2014 were called Simon, after being the 8th most popular choice for boys in 2014.
