Is the 5 Second Rule A Myth?

if you're a parent or you've been a child (so yes EVERYBODY) you've undoubledly heard about the 5-second rule.

It's also known in some parts as the 3-second rule or the 7-second rule depending on how tasty the dropped item is.

It's the idea that if you drop food on the ground you have so many seconds to pick it up and eat it before bacteria and spoil it making the consumption dangerous. You're just guaranteed to get crook!

Scientists from Rutgers University in the United States put the theory to the test and found that it is indeed a myth.

They tested watermelon, bread, butter and gummy candies on four surfaces - stainless steel, ceramic tiles, wood and carpet.

They found that different foods take different times to transfer bacteria depending on moisture, surface area and time.

Unsurprisingly, watermelon had the highest level of contamination.

They discovered bacteria actually transfers to food in less than five seconds and in some even less than one second.

So basically there's no set rule. just go with guidelines. Eat the biscuit you dropped. throw away the jam
