A report has confirmed for those that are in denial that "binge-watching" of television series is leaving not just themselves, but millions of people short of sleep.

There is increasing numbers of viewers that are staying up late because they lack the mental willpower to press the stop button. This situation has been made worse by the introduction of on-demand TV and streaming services, such as Netflix.

Nearly one in ten people are reported to watch television until midnight, says research company Trajectory. This amount has almost doubled since the turn of the millennium, when TV series in DVD boxed sets were introduced. While DVDs require people to get off their bottom and replace the disc, streaming services automatically screen the next part of a series as one finishes.

The survey said nine per cent of people watched TV until midnight last spring, compared with five per cent in 2000.

An online poll of more than 2,000 people found that growing numbers of people regularly stay up into the early hours of the morning.

The research tells us that in 1974, 95 per cent of the population was asleep by 1.30 in the morning, compared to 2011, which has dropped to 85 per cent, leaving nearly one in six people still awake at that time.

Psychologist Jo Hemmings has said: "We are in real danger of losing sleep and quality time with our families to the all-seeing eye in the corner of the living room. Remember that TV series are designed to get us hooked and keep us watching. Set an episode quota and stick to it."
