In July, Joel Burger is marrying Ashley King in Jacksonville. That's right. It's the Burger-King wedding.

Joel and Ashley are going with it. For their engagement photo, which appeared in newspapers, they posed next to a Burger King logo outside the restaurant. And while it is tradition for the woman's name to appear first in the announcement, they flipped the sequence around. The King-Burger wedding would not have been the same.

Joel and Ashley, a couple of New Berlin kids, grew up together. They have known each other since kindergarten. But it was in the fifth grade that they were given the name.

Ashley explains the origin: "We had a yo-yo assembly ..."

Stop right there. What's a yo-yo assembly?

"I just remember they had a bunch of yo-yos. The guy at the assembly was a motivational speaker, and he used yo-yos."

"After the man was finished with his motivational speech, he asked the two fifth-grade (student council) representatives to stand up as he wanted the students to applaud our efforts in helping set up his event. As soon as he said, 'Joel Burger and Ashley King,' he started to laugh out loud and pronounced we were 'Burger King' "

Joel and Ashley were classmates through high school, and the Burger King thing stayed with them all the way.

"I didn't really ask her out until going into freshman year of college," Joel says, "but we had talked all through junior and senior years in high schools. I would have called that dating. That's what I would have called it anyway."

After high school, Ashley went to the University of Illinois Springfield. Joel went to Monmouth College. College brought an entirely new crowd of classmates, but as soon as Joel or Ashley would say who they were dating, the Burger King tag started all over again.

"We have yet to escape the teasing," Ashley says, "but we have fully embraced our nickname."

Said Burger King spokesman Eric Hirschhorn, “When we heard about the happy Burger-King couple, we felt an overwhelming urge to celebrate their upcoming marriage.”

Burger King are paying the expenses and providing gifts for the July 17 wedding.
