Bigo the service dog is a life saver and his owner Audrey Stone is extremely grateful for that.
The golden retriever leapt into action when an oncoming school bus headed straight for the pair on Michael Neuner Avenue in New York, throwing himself at the closest part of the vehicle that he could.
Stone, 62, is blind. She suffered a fractured right elbow, three broken ribs, a fractured ankle and a cut to her head in the accident while a dazed Bigo had his leg cut down to the bone.
The driver of the school bus told police he didn’t see the pair crossing the road as they made their way home on Monday morning.
A witness who ran to help said:
"I don’t know if the driver thought Stone was going to move faster, but it looks like the dog tried to take most of the hit for her.
There were 15 EMTs and people all around her and the dog didn’t want to leave her side. He was flopping over to her and she didn’t want him to get away from her, either. She kept screaming, ‘Where’s Bigo? Where’s Bigo? Where’s Bigo?’ We kept telling her he was fine."
Friends and family are currently helping care for the dog while Stone remains in hospital. However both are expected to make a full recovery.
WHAT A HERO!
