Too many are claiming sarcasm is 'the lowest form of wit'...
However, academics at Insead - The Business School For The World - have said that sarcasm actually improves creativity and psychological well-being.
The school is made up of business graduates from all around the world and produced a paper called The Highest Form of Intelligence: Sarcasm Increases Creativity for Both Expressers and Recipients. The report highlights how sarcasm can cause conflict but is ultimately a catalyst for creativity.
The research behind the paper proposed and tested a theoretical model in which both the thinking behind a sarcastic comment and the interpretation of one creates abstract thinking, leading to enhanced creativity.Â
Certain tests proved that if you dwell on a sarcastic comment that was said to you, you recall the conversation and think of what you could've said to side step the sarcastic exchange. Therefore, in future you will think more about what you're saying in order to stop the person you're conversing with from making a sarcastic comment.
Similar theories apply to the expresser of sarcasm. Once you've delivered your sarcasm towards the recipient, it enhances your creativity with the intention of not making a similar slip of the tongue that could lead to an ironic sarcastic blast.
Sooooo sarcasm all 'round then? Nah, better not!
