Sam Smith is in NY recovering from vocal surgery, so when Celine Dion announced his win for best male artist he piped in via video to accept— using a series of cue cards.

The cards included a big thanks to fans and a shout out to some of his friends - Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj and Ed Sheeran.
