Oregon Lake Vanishes As 2-Metre Lava Tube Opens Up Beneath Water’s Surface

This bizarre video shows the moment a US lake was sucked dry of its water by a two-metre mystery hole, leaving it looking more like a park.

Locals in Oregon say the phenomenon has been happening for as long as they can remember on Lost Lake.

Scientists believe the spectacular sight is caused by a lave tube, a tunnel in the earth created to drain away lava during a volcanic eruption.

“In Lost Lake, this lava tube collapsed and became the drain hole for that lake,” Jude McHugh from the Williamette National Forest told ABC News.

McHugh said the lava tube would most likely drain all year round, but in the summer months, when there is little rainfall, the lake tends to dry up.

Residents in the past have tried to block the hole, but are warned that doing so may put local homes and businesses at risk of flooding.

It’s believed the water soaks into the earth, before seeping back out through springs in the local area.
