When attempting to lose weight, we are told that carbohydrate heavy foods, alcohol, and fatty foods are three things to to avoid at all costs.

Although for the most part this rule still stands, there are a couple of foods that are healthier than you'd think.

As with anything in life, moderation is key, so bear this is mind as you read the list.

Bread and potatoes

Considering 'carbs' are basically the devils spawn when dieting, both of these staples are usually left out of the traditional meal plan.

It turns out that brown bread (not white!) is packed full of vitamin laden germ, endosperm and fibre rich bran.

Potatoes aren't far behind on the scale coming in with Vitamin B, potassium, niacin and dietary fibre.

Beer and wine

Don't get too excited though, as this is still packed with sugar that isn't going to help the waist line, but it can provide some benefit.

Beer contains a lot of vitamins and minerals such as potassium, magnesium, and selium, whereas wine has Vitamin B6, Vitamin B2 and niacin.

Eggs

Eggs have been a staple food for generations, but the yellowy yolky goodness brings with it a lot of cholesterol.

Despite the high level of fat, they do bring with them a lot of vitamins and nutrients.

Bananas

Even though Bananas supply a lot of sugar, and a mild radiation dose with each serving, they aren't all bad.

They are a fantastic source of potassium, vitamins, and there's even a couple of minerals in there!

Peanut Butter

This delicious spread is filled fats and calories, but not all bad ones.

There's a few monounsaturated fats in there that will assist with lowering the risk of heart disease.

Beef

Eating a big juicy steak may seem like you are clogging your arteries with harmful fats and cholesterol.

You still may well be filing your arteries, but at the same time, stearic acid is in there which has been proven to drastically lower the risk of heart disease.
