Have you been matching with some unattractive idiots on Tinder lately? Well, there's a reason for that...
Tinder's secret rating system has probably determined that you're an unattractive idiot . Same for if you keep getting matched with sexy rugby players.
Fast Company have said there is an internal ranking system that Tinder assigns users called an Elo score.
Tinder CEO Sean Rad confirmed the rating system’s existence while being interviewed by writer Austin Carr and then goes on to stress that his own score is “above average.” The rating system is said to work by creating more compatible matches between users.
So, how does it work?
“It’s not just how many people swipe right on you,” Rad said. “It’s very complicated. It took us two and a half months just to build the algorithm because a lot of factors go into it.”
What other factors?
“Some people really favor facial hair, while some do not,” said a Tinder data analyst. “Same thing with tattoos, photos with pets or children, excessive outdoors shots, or photos of you with a tiger. Tinder may look for deeper patterns in who is swiping who and use that to adjust who you should be matched with — that would actually make sense — but it doesn’t state that explicitly.”
Ooooooookayyy. We are hoping it's getting it right, that's all!
Writer Austin Carr was offered to see his own Elo score during his interview and was placed at the "upper end of average". But when he went to scrutinise the data breakdown of his score, an engineer blocked the screen and Carr was assured that he didn't want to see how they arrived at his score.
Eeeeeek maybe the Elo score is something we're all better off not knowing...
