You wouldn't think it, but in one way, alcohol can actually help your relationship. Researchers are claiming that couples who get drunk together can as a result have a happier, healthier, and longer-lasting marriage.Â
Published in the Journals of Gerontology: Psychology Sciences, the study surveyed nearly 3,000 couples that had been married for an average of 33 years. The researchers found that couples who drank together were better off than those marriages where only one partner drank.Â
The study also found that in relationships where one person does all the drinking they were much more prone to marital problems — especially if the woman was the one boozing while her husband stayed sober.
However, it's worth noting that couples also fared well and maintained healthy relationships if both parties abstained from drinking.
"We're not sure why this is happening," study author Dr. Kira Birditt of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor told Reuters Health, "but it could be that couples that do more leisure time activities together have better marital quality."
