A nurse in Italy is accused of killing up to 38 patients because she found them or their relatives "annoying".

Daniela Poggiali (42) was arrested on Friday on murder charges.

Poggiali caught the attention of authorities after the April death of 78-year-old Rosa Calderoni who was admitted into hospital in the town of Lugo with a diabetes-related ailment. Calderoni died from an injection of potassium which can provoke cardiac arrest. Prosecutors say that their investigation is more difficult because potassium chloride fades from the bloodstream within a couple days, making it hard to detect.

Her death triggered an investigation, which found that 38 others had died mysteriously while Poggiali was on duty, the news agency reported.
One of Poggiali’s fellow nurses described her as a “cold person but always eager to work,” according to CEN.

Police say the nurse’s cell phone included a photo of her making the thumbs-up sign next to a patient’s corpse, according to the New York Post.

“I can assure you in that all my professional years of seeing shocking photos, there were few such as these,” prosecutor Alessandro Mancini said.

She may face additional charges for disrespecting the dead.

Another of Poggiali’s colleagues said the accused nurse was once reported for giving powerful laxatives to patients at the end of her shift to make work tougher for nurses working after her.
