The board game already causes enough arguments around the dinner table...

Netflix has officially announced "Monopoly," an unscripted series that puts 12 contestants in a full-size Monopoly Town Square, competing for a $2 million prize. The format mirrors the game itself: players earn money, acquire real estate, and build their holdings throughout the competition, with anyone who goes bankrupt eliminated one by one. The last contestant standing wins it all. Netflix is also opening this up to the public, with an online audition process for anyone hoping to land a spot.

The series comes from Studio Lambert, the production company behind "Squid Game: The Challenge" and "The Circle," in partnership with Hasbro Entertainment. It's just one piece of a larger push from Hasbro, which is also developing a Monopoly film with LuckyChap and Lionsgate, along with projects tied to Clue, Dungeons & Dragons, and Magic: The Gathering.

"Monopoly" is set to premiere in fall 2027, joining a growing list of Netflix shows built around nostalgic games and franchises, a trend that includes Squid Game: The Challenge and the upcoming "Wonka's The Golden Ticket."

Whether the tension of controlling a property monopoly translates as well on screen as it does around the kitchen table remains to be seen. But if the board game's reputation is anything to go by, this one won't be short on drama.
