If you're not familiar with Karl Stefanovic, he's an Australian television presenter who is known for making hilarious (usually bad) jokes and often losing it on air. But now he may be known for standing up against sexism too.
Karl has been in the television industry for two decades and started to notice something unusual. His co-host on the morning show “Today”, Lisa Wilkinson, is constantly flooded with comments from viewers and the press about what she wears on TV. But no one has ever called him out on his fashion choices.
So he's made an amazing point about how women are treated in the media by wearing the same no-frills blue suit day after day for a whole year and he says no one has noticed.
Karl was sick and tired of hearing how his friends and colleagues, including co-host Lisa Wilkinson and friend Samantha Armytage were being judged for what they wore on TV, so he decided to make a point, telling Fairfax that: “I’ve worn the same suit on air for a year — except for a couple of times because of circumstance — to make a point.”
“No one has noticed; no one gives a s**t...I’m judged on my interviews, my appalling sense of humour — on how I do my job, basically. Whereas women are quite often judged on what they’re wearing or how their hair is.”
Stefanovic said Wilkinson and a “Today” team member were the only ones who knew about his secret experiment. “They often remark that it’s getting a bit stinky,” he said. “I’m hoping to get it into the dry cleaners at the end of the year.”
