We’ve got some bad news about the delicious vegetable we call potatoes, and we're terribly sorry.
According to a new report from The Sydney Morning Herald, eating potatoes (and other delicious starchy foods…like mac and cheese) puts you at risk for developing diabetes.
To make it worse, the risk is even greater for pregnant women. The report says, “The study, published in the British Medical Journal, found that women who consumed more than five servings of potatoes per week before becoming pregnant were more likely to get gestational diabetes based on data pulled from thousands of patients over 10 years.”
Five servings of potatoes over a week actually doesn’t sound like a crazy amount. These women weren't even eating potatoes for every meal or anything. And gestational diabetes is a serious health risk. Most women with the condition deliver healthy babies, but the disease needs to be carefully monitored because it can cause complications such as excessive birth weight, early birth and respiratory distress syndrome, low blood sugar, high blood pressure and more health problems.
It is okay though, because eating the occasional potato isn’t going to kill you or anything. The key is moderation. Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits and veggies and just treat yourself to some potato goodness every so often... or everyday if you're us.
