This Is Why Your Eye Randomly Starts Twitching

You've probably experienced it before; that uncomfortable moment when your eye, seemingly for absolutely no reason at all, starts to twitch?

We can now know why this happens, as The Sun has reported the reason why we actually experience these random twitches. Doctors have a technical term for eye twitching, myokymia, and it turns out that myokymia is ultimately caused by stress.

There is no need to worry too much, as the spasms are pretty harmless and are caused by tiny muscles and nerves around the eye which suddenly begin twitching when under stress.

But there is one other major reason behind eye twitching apart from stress. Doctor Matthew Palmer, from the Southwestern Eye Center in the U.S., said that the twitching is most likely triggered by overindulging on caffeine, alcohol and sugar.

If you are experiencing frequent eye twitches then you should probably take this as a sign to cut back on those treats.

Another obvious cause behind the twitch can be that you need glasses as the  muscles around your eyes are tired from squinting.

In very rare circumstances, the twitches could be a sign of more serious brain conditions including Tourette’s syndrome and Parkinson’s disease. If you are concerned about the frequency of the twitches than you may want to see your doctor or GP.
