Mike and Melita Perrett of Guernsey met in 2005, one year before Mike had an accident that nearly ended his life.

He was doing volunteer work for an orphanage in India when he fell off a mountain.

Melita said: "He was told he was lucky to be alive. The force taken to break the bone would have skewered him if his legs had not buckled."

Mike was forced to have his right leg amputated but didn’t want to completely say goodbye to the limb so he asked his doctors to let him keep part of his leg.

When Mike wanted to propose in 2011, he devised a plan to turn the aftermath of his injury into a symbol of love.

He contacted London-based jewelers Ingle & Rhode to have pieces of the bone put into an engagement ring.

Two bone fragments and a quarter-carat diamond were placed inside a platinum design.

Melita said: "I guess why it’s so special to me is because I think it shows his bravely coming to terms with something like that so positively… which has to be a good attribute for marriage."

She added Mike got the idea for the ring from a friend who wore plastic earrings made to look like bone.
